The Connected Educator Chapter 6 Summary - Tyler Tarabocchia
The main idea in Chapter 6 of The Connected Educator is personal learning networks. These networks help people obtain more knowledge through other people. This can also be seen as connections or relationships. With these connections with other people, these communities grow and help people learn and become leaders. "[Personal learning Networks] consist of streams of people, information, expertise, learning objects, and images that are of interest to you" (Nussbaum-Beach and Hall 92). The benefit of having a personal learning network is the ability to learn from other people that share a similar goal and gather knowledge and ideas from them. From there, you can pass on that newly learned knowledge or just continue to learn from others; that's what makes learning communities so great.
Finding the right community is also important to note when trying to find a personal learning network. Depending on who you follow can change the whole focus of your personal network. To start, connecting with respected bloggers is a great way to start a personal network. Twitter is probably the most popular app to use to connect with other people. Twitter matches you with people that share a similar interest which is a great way to find the people you're trying to connect to. Though some social media can be scary because you don't know who's across the screen, it is still a great way to connect with people and learn. "As you build your networks through blogs, Delicious, or Twitter, include people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, as that dissonance will extend your learning" (Nussbaum-Beach and Hill 93). Making your community more diverse is a great way to learn grab new ideas and use them to your benefit. There are other great apps to use to connect with others, but Twitter is probably the best one to meet new people with similar interests as you.
Personal Learning Networks are a great way to connect with others around the world and learn. This network is a great idea to utilize depending on your career. Some jobs may need to use these personal networks like teachers. Personally, I'm not sure what I want to be when I'm older, but all I know is that having some sort of personal network connection is crucial. Having these networks may also give me a job opportunity that I never would have thought of getting. Connecting with people is the best way to learn and better ourselves to become the people we dream of becoming.
Hey Tyler,
ReplyDeleteI thought your summary of chapter 6 was very well done and put together. I agree with the points that you made and I said similar things in my summary of chapter 6. I think having personal learning networks are great. They can benefit you and they can benefit people around you. People who have questions regarding their career's they usually reach out to people who are in that field, or if people are unsure if they want to do something they get input from others who are in that field to see if they want to do it. Having a personal network is great and you never know what you may learn from others.
Hi Tyler,
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned the importance of finding the right learning community and network before you join and I completely agree. Ensuring the members you surround yourself with hold similar and honorable values and goals, and areas of interest, as well as also connecting with diverse backgrounds and points of view in order to know you will be helped in the areas you want and to ensure you will need to truly think about your own views and ideas and others, ultimately providing you the opportunity to change, question, or maintain your own thoughts for further growth. Great job!
Hi Tyler. I completely agree with you when you say that having some sort of personal network connection is crucial no matter what job or field you go into. Making real and authentic connections truly can have the power to set you apart from the rest. The best opportunities tend to come from being open to conversation and open to making connections. I like how you mentioned Twitter as one of the many great platforms out there that can be used to connect with people. Twitter truly is quite a diverse platform, which really can assist in learning new things. Since social media can be scary, what helps you navigate scams or the dangers across social media? How do you know who is authentic and who you should not interact with? Great job!
