The Connected Educator Chapter 2 Summary - Tyler Tarabocchia
This chapter in The Connected Educator expresses the importance of developing connected learning models. There are connected learning communities which are the ability to collaborate with other programs and people, and professional learning communities which can be compared to teachers and administrators having a similar goal; helping students achieve their academic goals. These two learning communities are essential when it comes to teaching and helping others. For my future career, I am unsure what I want to be, but one of the jobs I am currently contemplating is being a business manager. Being a business manager is a lot of work and it requires me to be an open and motivating person. Connected learning communities (especially local communities) is a great way for a manager to learn and better themselves for that manager role. Listening to your employees and the people around you not only benefits you as a person, but it will most likely benefit the business as well. "In connected learning communities, colleagues develop shared visions, common goals, and beliefs around principled change" (Nussbaum-Beach and Hall 28). Connected learning communities are a great source to learn from others and take in new opinions and thoughts. In the business world, with everyone having the same goal in mind, having these connected communities is a great source for growing the business and helping bring in new customers. "Connected learners expand their schemas and process issues and possible solutions from new perspectives and conceptual frames" (Nussbaum-Beach and Hall 42). Connected learners hear other viewpoints and opinions and learn from them. With that, they then teach other people about what they learn expanding their knowledge, given the name "connected learners". Learning different connected learning models is important for everyone to know because it can help expand your knowledge on new topics and grow as a human.
Good morning Tyler,
ReplyDeleteA lot of people are unsure what they want to be, but eventually over time you find out what it is that is your true calling. I think being a business manager is a great career, and you are right it does take a lot of work and time. I think the points that you mentioned are great. You have to be involved in the community, being in a community and having a presence is a big deal. Not only will you build bonds with people in the community, but they know who you are and they see that you want to be apart of their community. I have done that with my job, and eventually over time you will see results.
If you were to pursue becoming a business manager, the connected learning educator plan idea definitely applies to you. Regardless, I think it is important for all people to learn this method because personally I think that communication is so important. As a manager, you are seen as a role model or leader to others. I like how you mentioned that listening to your employees would be a way to not only benefit relationships but the entire business as well. In business, I do agree with you on how colleagues should be generally on the same page and have the same mindset. But it also important that everyone is also a good listener and will be willing to hear others out.
ReplyDeleteHi Tyler, I really like the connection you made to being a business manager and the professional learning communities. Being a manager is not an easy task but one way to make it easier is listening to feedback from employees. I feel like this is often neglected by many managers. Learning what your employees think or taking their opinions into account is essential to created a success and efficient business.
ReplyDeleteHi Tyler. As a business major, I can definitely confirm that being open minded and learning from others is a huge part of running a successful business or being a successful businessperson. Learning from others and being open to opinions is something that never stops in the business world. It's an ongoing cycle that keeps us informed and up to date on things we may have never learned or known about before. Although I cannot say that I've had experience being a manager, I can easily say that it probably is not an easy job to go through alone. Thats why being open to the thoughts and opinions of employees definitely makes for a more interactive work environment where teamwork is prioritized. Great post!
ReplyDeleteHi Tyler, I am a business marketing major and I totally agree that being open minded about your employees opinions will create a better work environment where everyone is comfortable. I think it also goes for customers as well. Taking criticism from customers to meet their desires would also benefit a business in the long run. But overall good post!
