The Connected Educator Chapter 5 Summary - Tyler Tarabocchia

Chapter 5 in The Connected Educator talks about how important it is to use different tools to support connected learning. There are many tools used to help connect with others. Early in the chapter, it brings up tools for documenting and archiving learning. These are important because it allows the user to track what they have found on the internet. The Three ways to track new information are social bookmarking, Delicious, and Diigo. Social Bookmarking is great to use because it keeps all the information you found organized. Delicious is a website that is capable of finding tags to find other web pages similar to what the user is looking up. Diigo is also a website that is similar to Delicious. Diigo is more enhanced than delicious, giving the user the ability to annotate, use sticky notes, or highlight key information right on the webpage they are on. These are important sources to utilize when trying to keep track of all the websites and information you found.

Later in the chapter, it brings up different tools for connecting and collaborating. These tools are the most used sources when trying to build your personal learning network. These sources are blogs and podcasts. These two sources provide the information people look for when trying to grow online and connect with other people. "Blogs are a great resource of ideas, information, and experiences about learning, leading, and teaching" (Nussbaum-Beach and Hall 73). Blogs are becoming more and more popular and reading some blogs is not a bad idea for learning. Podcasts have been growing in popularity as well, due to Covid. Tons of social media influencers

have been leaning towards podcasts to keep up in popularity. Podcasts are for people that enjoy listening rather than reading. People such as Joe Rogan, bring popular people and educators to his podcast and learn. Podcasts with educators are the kinds of podcasts people should be listening to.

Twitter is probably the most used social media app on the web. Twitter gives the user the ability to find whatever they are looking for in a matter of seconds. Twitter allows users to follow people and hashtags to keep up with whatever they enjoy. Personally, I have not experimented much with Twitter, but going off of what a lot of people say, it seems useful. Most influencers use Twitter to connect with their followers. "... the Twitterverse is large and diverse, and you can easily find a broad network of people with whom to connect and collaborate" (Nussbaum-Beach and Hall 82). Finding different ways to connect with educators and influencers is key when trying to expand your personal network.

Online networking is going to grow more and more popular and it is important to jump on the trend sooner than later. Currently, I am unsure what I want to be, but I do know that using these tools will be important in life. These tools will be crucial for me to connect with because these different connections allow me to grow and learn more. Twitter is probably the best tool to use because there are tons of different users and educators to connect with. Do you plan on joining Twitter to connect with other educators?

  1. Hi Tyler,
Before getting into details about what you wrote in your response to this blog, I want to mention that the blog has great pictures and details to make everything pop. It is organized very well and will make readers interested in reading. You talked about important things learned from chapter 5. I liked how you pointed out tools are helping people connect and collaborate. You also picked a great app to explain how a social media app can help people connect all over.
